OHV Deputies Rescue Lost, Stranded Dirt Bikers on Jacksonville Area Trail

JACKSONVILLE, Ore. – Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputies received an Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon ECSO 911 Dispatch call for lost and stranded dirt bikers Sunday night on John’s Peak outside of Jacksonville, Ore. Due to the inclement weather and trail difficulty, the riders became lost and a dirt bike broke down. The riders advised ECSO 911 Dispatch that they were not dressed for the weather, had no food and water, and their cell phones were almost out of battery.

A JCSO Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) deputy with knowledge of the area responded and quickly located the subjects. They were cold and wet, but otherwise unharmed. The deputy returned them back to a Patrol car at the Pair A Dice Ranch Road staging area where they received a ride back to family. The dirt bikes were recovered from the trail the following day. JCSO works closely with the Motorcycle Riders Association (M.R.A.) and regularly patrols the 1200 acres of OHV trails in the John’s Peak area.

Although this incident led to a positive outcome, please remember to be safe when traveling off the highway.
- Always have a plan (especially if in unfamiliar terrain).
- Tell someone where you are going and when to expect your return.
- Carry a fully-charged cell phone and plan ahead to know where you lose cell reception.
- Ride within your limits and know winter conditions can change trails quickly.
- If you get lost on a trail, try to backtrack to a main road instead of continuing.
The JCSO OHV program is funded through the Oregon All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Grant program. The grant funds come from the Oregon ATV user permit sales and a fuel tax. For more information go to https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/ATV/Pages/ATV-overview.aspx
