Missing Person: Michael Bryson, Male, Caucasian, from Eugene, Oregon

Missing since: August 5, 2020

NamUs: #MP72954

Lane County Sheriff's Office Case #: 2020-5286

Case Investigator: Lane County Sheriff's Office, Det. Matthew Shrives

On August 5, 2020, Michael Bryson of Eugene, Oregon, was last seen at Hobo Campground near Dorena, Oregon. He had been camping with friends. He was said to have left the campground at around 4.30 am and has not been seen since. Some of his clothes were found months later in an area visible from the road and searched many times. But Michael is still missing.

Michael is 6'0" tall and weighed approximately 180 pounds with short brown hair and hazel eyes. Michael is currently 29 years old. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, black shorts, and white Crocs with rainbows on them and might have also been wearing a brown, corduroy baseball cap. He had several tattoos on both legs, ribs, and arms.

Hundreds of volunteers showed up to search miles of wilderness in the area. SAR teams on foot, on horseback, combed the area, and drones were deployed to scan from the air. For 19 days straight, the steep terrain with overgrowth and dense with trees was searched. But there was no trace of Michael. The Lane County Sheriff's Office had coordinated over 15 separate searches spanning two counties and paid and volunteer searchers logged over 700 hours.

Michael’s parents, who have never given up hope, searched the area where Michael vanished three to four times a week, investigating tips and making sure flyers were up on trailheads, bulletin boards, and at the campsite.

If you have any information regarding Michael Bryson’s disappearance or the circumstances leading up to his disappearance, please contact the Lane County Sheriff’s Office tip-line at 541-682-4167.

“Investigative genetic genealogy (IGG) is a lead generation tool that is used to identify human remains by tying DNA from those remains to a family with a missing person. It is also used in perpetrator cases to point to the likely identity of an individual whose DNA was found at a crime scene. Identification of a person is accomplished through the use of comparative DNA analysis, which measures the amount of DNA that is shared between two people, combined with traditional genealogy research using historical records to infer relationships between individuals.

Families of missing persons can help by uploading their DNA profiles into a secure, open-source website called GEDmatch. Family members can use the DNA data from any completed consumer DNA or genealogy test they have already taken and upload that data onto the GEDMatch website. When users “opt-in” for law enforcement searches, the DNA profile becomes a powerful tool to connect unidentified remains and the families of missing persons. Go to https://www.GEDMatch.com for more information and to upload your DNA data to start searching.”
