DUPLEX RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE - 1000 BLOCK OF NEVADA COURT

Roseburg Fire Dept.

At 12:24 a.m. on August 16, 2021, Roseburg Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 1000 block of Nevada Court Avenue.  Douglas County Dispatch received notification of a porch on fire next to the residential structure of the reporting party.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a multi-family, residential duplex with fire and smoke showing from the front porch of one unit.  The fire quickly spread to the residential structure.  Firefighters made an exterior attack to extinguish the fire, conducted a primary and secondary search, secured utilities, and completed overhaul.  Three adult residents, three children, and one dog were displaced due to the fire; however, no one was injured in the fire.

A total of 9 firefighters assisted with firefighting operations.  Other agencies assisting with the fire included Douglas County Fire District #2, Umpqua Valley Ambulance, Pacific Power, and Avista Utilities.

The residential duplex sustained structural and water damage.  The duplex is no longer habitable.  A fire investigator was on scene and the fire was determined to be caused by an unattended cooking device and was found to be accidental in nature.

The Roseburg Fire Department wants to encourage everyone to practice safe cooking behaviors to help keep you and your family safe.  Please remember the following grilling safety tips courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association:

  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
  • Keep your gill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave an outside cooking fire unattended.
  • Make sure an adult is present at all times.
  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.
