Suspect Arrested After Fleeing from Officers in a Stolen Vehicle
Portland Police Bureau - 11/25/18
On Saturday, November 24, 2018, at 10:58 p.m., officers assigned to the Portland Police Bureau Tactical Operation Division's Gang Enforcement Team observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Southeast Division Street near Southeast 139th Avenue.
Officers observed the vehicle was a black Mazda 3 sedan. When the officers submitted a records check on the vehicle's license plate, they learned the vehicle had been reported stolen to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. The Gang Enforcement Team officers turned on the emergency lights and siren to their patrol vehicle to perform a traffic stop on the driver of the stolen vehicle. The suspect sped away at a high rate of speed. Because of foggy conditions, limiting visibility, and the high volume of traffic, the officers did not pursue the vehicle; but provided information regarding the vehicle's description and direction of travel to officers in the area via police radio.
Responding officers searched for the vehicle and continued to provide radio updates. A patrol sergeant, positioned at Southeast 102nd Avenue and Southeast Stark Street, learned the vehicle was headed in his direction. The sergeant deployed spike strips on Southeast Stark Street along what was believed to be the stolen vehicle's path. The driver of the stolen vehicle drove over the spike strips and continued driving at a high rate of speed.
Gang Enforcement Team and North and East Precinct officers continued to search for the vehicle and driver. During the search, North Precinct officers located a black Mazda 3 driving with no rubber on the vehicle's front wheels near Northeast 82nd Avenue and Northeast Tillamook Street. The officers observed the driver stop the vehicle and run into the neighborhood. The officers requested a police canine team to their location. Officers conducted a neighborhood search with the assistance of the police canine team. During the neighborhood search, the police canine located the suspect hiding in a vehicle in the 8300 block of Northeast Hancock Street. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Matthew W. Golding. Golding was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving (two counts), Driving While Revoked - Misdemeanor Level, Escape in the Third Degree, Interfere with a Peace Officer, Attempt to Elude by Vehicle (two counts), and Attempt to Elude on Foot.
