Suspect Jailed in Prospect Stabbing
Jackson Co. Sheriff's Office - 08/27/18
PROSPECT, Ore. – One woman is in jail and another is recovering from a stab wound after a fight in Prospect on Sunday afternoon. Detectives say the altercation started outside the library, which was closed at the time.
On August 26, 2018, at 1:02 p.m., dispatch received a 911 call reporting a stabbing at the Prospect branch of the Jackson County Library, 150 Mill Creek Drive. A Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputy patrolling in the area arrived on scene within three minutes of the 911 call, but both the victim and suspect had already fled.
Detectives later learned that Melissa Renea Peck, 21, and Haylee Nicole Brewer, 19, both of the Prospect area, arrived at the library and began arguing about their romantic involvement with the same man. The fight turned physical, and then Peck obtained a knife and stabbed Brewer in the chest.
Brewer fled to a nearby residence to get help. Deputies noted that cell phone coverage is inconsistent in the area; nobody was able to call for help from the scene.
Medics from the Prospect Rural Fire Protection District responded to assist Brewer. She was transported to the Prospect airport and then flown to Rogue Regional Medical Center by Mercy Flights helicopter.
Deputies found Peck hiding nearby and took her into custody without further incident. She was uninjured.
Deputies transported Peck to the Jackson County jail for lodging on a charge of assault in the first degree. Peck was also lodged for outstanding warrants for failing to appear on charges of menacing, harassment, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, giving false information to police, and resisting arrest. Peck’s total bail at lodging was $112,500.
Lehman Louis Adams III, 24, of Prospect, was arrested for an outstanding warrant and a contempt charge for violation of a no-contact release agreement. His bail at lodging was $12,500.
The case has been forwarded to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. The case will be reviewed to determine whether additional charges are warranted.
Deputies and detectives spoke with several people during the investigation, but they believe there may be others who have not yet provided statements. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the JCSO tip line at (541) 774-8333. Refer to case #18-17958.
