COMMUNITY MEETING TILLER RFPD STATIONTUESDAY JULY 31, 2018 6:30 PM
Fire fighters have been able to increase containment on te South Umpqua Complex to 16% in spite of the steep terrain, dry fuels, hot temperatures, and active fire behavior.
A burnout was initiated along the north side of the Miles Fire to strengthen fire lines. This burnout was successful and held within containment lines. Miles Fire burned actively after 4 PM and through the night. Embers from the main fire blew to the south, starting spot fires toward Ragsdale Butte and Gobblers Knob.
Columbus Fire mop-up continues along the west edge while preparation and burnout are underway along the north and south sides. A dozer that was prepositioned in anticipation of active fire behavior was utilized to contain a spot fire that came out of Squaw Creek.
Snowshoe Fire personnel continue to make good progress on mopping up and repairing fire suppression damage. Resources are being reassigned to other fires in the complex as needed.
The US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Douglas Forest Protective Association, and Oregon Department of Forestry are sharing helicopters, crews, camps, strategies, and radio frequencies in order to obtain mutually beneficial outcomes. This interagency cooperation allows for the most effective and efficient use of fire fighting resources.
Today’s weather is predicted to be similar to Sunday’s with temperatures ranging from the 80s to the 90s with humidity around 25-35%.
The Level 2 Evacuation Notice remains in effect near Sugar Pine Fire and Miles Fire for the Elk Creek area (Jackson County). The Level 2 Evacuation Notice remains in effect for Flat Creek west of Miles Fire (Douglas County).
